   US ends historic 40-day government shutdown  Headline / Lead (opening) The United States moved to end a record-breaking, 40-day federal government shutdown after Senate negotiators advanced a bipartisan deal. The short-term measure would reopen the government and keep funding in place until late January while a small number of annual spending bills are advanced.  What the deal does (quick summary) The deal provides temporary funding through around late January and includes three full-year appropriations (military construction and veterans affairs; legislative branch; Department of Agriculture).
